Brian takes off with multi-brand JET and SPAR as turnover jumps £1.1m

JET Maybole service station is a 12 nozzle, four million litre site in the centre of the busy town of Maybole (population 5,000) situated nine milessouth of Ayr on the A77 main trunk road from Glasgow to Stranraer. In 2015 owner Brian Connolly a former RAF Nimrod captain decided to expand his convenience offer and became the first JET and SPAR dual branded forecourt in the UK.

The old days are gone

“People’s shopping habits are changing. Not everyone does the big weekly supermarket shop anymore; they are doing two or three smaller shops, a trend we could take advantage of. Our customers are also very brand conscious; they want to see a great choice of products and the stronger the convenience brands held on site, the more of a customer boost you get. Forecourts are not just for fuel anymore; they are local convenience hubs and that is where the growth is.”

“Figures have gone through the roof! Store takings have grown from £8,000 to £20,000 a week straight off the bat and fuel sales are up around 10% to nearly 4million litres.”

Safety and JET fuel quality

“By the beginning of 2015 we had been with JET for eight years and they had been a really good, reliable fuel supplier. Paul, Lorraine, Bruce and the team bring a personal touch. But I felt I needed to consider other fuel brands with convenience tie-ups. However when JET announced that its new convenience package would include a SPAR tie up including the possibility of forecourt co-branding, they were the obvious winner. We could enhance our convenience offer, but still keep the safety and fuel quality assurance of the JET brand.”

Convenience boost £3.9m to £5million

Was the JET/ SPAR tie up a success?
“Well, we opened the rebranded site and store in August (2015) and in the first three months the figures have gone through the roof! Store takings have grown from £8,000 to £20,000 a week straight off the bat (£1m annually) and fuel sales are up around 10% to nearly 4million litres and holding steady! It’s not just my old customers spending more. I am seeing new people in the store everyday – the brands are pulling them in.”

I’m staying

“Will I stay with JET in the future? Well, as long as JET offers a competitive offer I don’t see me going anywhere else. JET is trying hard to expand its network and services. They are moving in the right direction in terms of brand partnerships and local marketing, I like the people and I get what I need day in day out. I’m staying”
